The Chippewas did not get their MAC opener started the way they would have liked. Plagued by yet another slow start, the Chippewas found themselves down 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. A 14-yard scamper from Ohio tailback Chris Garrett and a 44 toss by backup quarterback Boo Jackson put the Chippewas in a hole early.
However, the Chippewas would find their poise in the second quarter as CMU got on the board with a ## yard run by Ontario Sneed. Dan LeFevour and the Chippewa receivers continually open space in the Bobcat defense. At halftime, the score read 14-10 as LeFevour had 206 yards through the air.
The Chippewas continued their comeback as Antonio Brown returned Ohio's first punt of the second half 75 yards for the go ahead score. The next Chippewa score of the game didn't come until 13:07 left in the game. CMU jumped out to a 24-14 lead courtesy of another Ontario Sneed touchdown run.
However, the Bobcats proved their composure as they mounted a respectable comeback.. Boo Jackson only needed 2:13 to mount a 5 play, 66 yard drive capped off by a 43 yard toss to Barrett Way.
The Chippewas answered right back with a vintage Dan LeFevour drive. The quick strike offense was a factor yet again as CMU needed only 1:34 to put another touchdown on the board. With 9:08 left in the game, LeFevour barreled his way into the endzone for a 2 yard score.
A high scoring fourth quarter had more fireworks as Boo Jackson threw up a 77 yard deep ball to Chris Garrett with only :15 gone off the clock. With the score 31-28, CMU needed a strong performance from the defense in the closing seconds to stave off a Bobcat comeback.
The Chippewa offense was running on all cylinders as they racked up 458 yards of total offense. For the game, All-Everything LeFevour was 28-for-42 for 361 yards. Although he didn't reach the endzone through the air, he found the endzone on the ground with 17 carries for 45 yards.
At 2-1 (1-0), the Chippewas will look to get their third victory of the season in a rematch of the 2007 Motor City Bowl against the Purdue Boilermakers. ChippewaCountry.com will be in West Lafayette to provide premium game coverage.
